The Adventure Begins!

Janus and Zaniz arrive in Hommlet. They decide to hide their identity as Elves. After talking to a Goodwife in a doorway, they head to the Welcome Wench, taking note of their surroundings on the way. After garnering much of the background information of the area from one of the Potboys, Janus suffers a moment of insanity and almost kills Zaniz in an attempt to juggle his sword. Approached by the Goodwife Grundigoot, Janus accidently reveals their identity as Elves, to the Goodwife’s delight. They realise they actually can’t really afford to do much drinking. Janus begins to drink from a concealed bottle of wine, while Zaniz buys some terrible ale.

They plan to head straight to the ruins of The Temple of Elemental Evil, scavenge around the ruins, then sell what they find for some money. After two hours travel, they encounter the Moathouse, assume it’s the ruins of the temple, and spy something in a near by pool. Off guard, they are attacked by a couple of brigands. After dispatching them with some trouble and looting them, they are similarly accosted by a Giant Tick, who forces them to flee.

Back at Hommlet they proceed to make asses of themselves in front of the town council, by waxing on about the forces of evil invading the old temple. They are corrected in their assumption that the Moathouse was the temple, and told to calm down. Their wounds are dressed, and Ostler Grundigoot agrees to let them sleep at the Inn on credit until they can go to the money changer tomorrow morning. In return they request some employment, and the Village Elder agrees to meet with them in the morning. With that they retire for the evening.

A Quiet Godsday at Hommlet

Waking early in the morning, Janus and Zaniz head to the Money Changer. Nira Melubb the money changer pays handsomely for a gem they had lifted of a Brigands corpse. Janus briefly considers attempting to rob the place, before deciding against it, and heading out. With the rest of the loot from the brigands, the pair head to the trading post. There they meet Rannos Davl and his partner Gremag. They instantly dislike them for trying to undercut them for the chainmail they offer to sell. Somehow, they end up hiring a Groom and a Man at Arms, but flat out refuse to buy equipment for them from the trading post.

Heading to the blacksmith, the are unpleased to find out just how much Gremag and Davl were going to rip them off for the chainmail. He also identifies the Short Swords the brigands have as his own work. They enquire a little about the blacksmith’s background and he tells them he’s Brother Smyth, assistant to the Druid of the Grove, and a devoted follower of the Old Faith. They thank him and leave.

At this point the pair realise they are being followed by the town drunk, Elmo. Elmo introduces himself as a man of arms, for hire, and begs them to hire him. They apologise and say they’ve already hired a man or two. He begs more, and offers to be paid in beer instead. Janus is suspicious and senses his Drunkness is faked. Draws his blade and attempts to attack Elmo, who avoids his blow easily, draws his dagger, and puts it to Janus’ throat. His cover blown, Elmo levels with the Adventurers.

Leading them to his parents barn, he reveals he’s in the employ of the Viscount of Verboblonc, as an agent, tasked to report unusual travellers. He warns the adventurers about Gremag and Davl’s hirelings, but suggests they keep them in employ. He begs them not to reveal his identity and agrees to accompany them on any expedition they choose to go on.

The Adventurers leave the barn and head to the Village Elders house, who is expecting them. He discusses employing them either to work on constructing the castle being built in the town, or clearing out the Moathouse. They agree to head to the Moathouse. He suggests they talk to Burne and Rufus about any trips they plan to go on.

They walk to Burne and Rufus’ tower and talk to both of them. Rufus tells them of his concerns about the defense of Hommlet, while Burne reveals his slightly greedy nature. Burne agrees to go with them for a (negotiated) 22% of the loot, but Rufus has other business and cannot leave Hommlet. With this, the Adventurers suggest they celebrate the formation of their group, and head to The Welcome Wench with Burne and Elmo. After a night of drinking, they head to bed, and decide to set off in the morning.

The Moathouse

In the early morning Janus, Zaniz, Burne, Elmo, the Hired Man at Arms and the Groom head to the Moathouse. Reaching the pool where they had previously saw creatures, they approached cautiously. Four Giant frogs jump out and attack, but are quickly dispatched by a Fireball from Burne and a few strikes from Janus and Zaniz. The tell the groom to wait outside and threaten him with violence should he leave.

Crossing the Drawbridge, Elmo and Burne fall through weakened wood. Burne gets pulled up by the party, and Casts Fly on Elmo. Advancing into the Ruins, they investigate a tower, where upon the Man at Arms is bitten and paralysed by a giant spider. Unable to help him, the party leaves him to his fate. They advance through the Moathouse ruins, find a staircase and follow it down into the dungeon.

There they find two merchants who are ready to be food for Lubash the Ogre. They free them and lure Lubash into a trap. He is quickly dispatched, but the fighting attracts two zombies, who are easily killed as well. Looting the bodies, they quickly discover a Gnome called Gimble who tells them he’s a spy for the Gnome Lands. Discovering a secret door, they advance through a narrow corridor, but are quickly trapped by a series of portculis traps. They journey deeper down, and fight a strange giant crayfish, who is killed almost instantly when Burne casts Lightning Bolt on his pool. Janus almost drowns in the pool, but Zaniz saves him.

Exploring futher, they happen upon some ghouls, who after slaying, reveal a sizable cache of loot. Discovering a secret door, they find themselves back at the staircase, go up and clear out the remaining upstairs moathouse ruins, killing a Giant Lizard, a Giant Tick and generally looting the place. They decide to send Gimble and the Merchants on their way, and along with the Groom, send them home to Hommlet.

Returning to the dungeon they discover an armory, loot it for all its worth, then set it alight. They equip some cloaks they find their. Returning to the Ghoul Crypts, they head to a previously unexplored corridoor and find guards similarly cloaked. They convince them to leave to fight the fire at the armory. It is now they encounter the fearsome Lareth the Beautiful. He gloats, and the adventurers attack him. He sees Burne is the biggest threat, blinds him, and dispatches him with his quarterstaff, sucking his lifeforce out to improve his powers. However he’s slain before he’s able to enchant the adventurers.

Victorious, the adventurers loot Lareth and Burne and leave. They spend the rest of the day selling off their loot.
